HCI: Bridging the Gap between Technology and Users

Evolution and Historical Development in HCI:

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is defined as the collaboration between a human (man, woman, child) and a computer. If we look nowadays so it’s very important for all of us living in the world. It’s a technology through which people learn about software how to create it and how to interact with devices on a computer through HCI. According to the research  The existence Of HCI was found in March 1982 (U.S.) National Bureau of Standards conference, “Computer system in human factors”, there were many conferences and workshops held around the world at that time. Many conferences were conducted around the world during that time. HCI plays a very big and important role in both computer science research and development and applied behavior and social science.

The Role of HCI in the Development of Computing and Technical Advancements:

The HCI was caliper in the 1970’s according to the research. After that, computing got very motivated results from generations and generations; as a result, it went up and up. Meeting several skills and techniques people reached many technical uses of computers they create software, games, excel, word spread, etc. As the days pass by people become more curious about HCI. They wished to learn more and more things about computers and gradually they got success in it and if we look behind the HCI played an important role in the world development .they are meeting achievements through HCI and are in the process to achieve more in all parts of their lives.

Understanding the Principles, Guidelines, and Standards:

In the early stage of HCI, computers were so big. It was so hard for people to merge with them. So they use them for very big calculations and make their work easy gradually they find a way to get it smaller then they make it small n easy to keep n use. At that time they were introduced in schools n, colleges. And some of the guidelines were few of them are here:

a.   Consistency.

b.   Offer Informative feedback.

c.   Errors should be prevented.

d.   Support the control of the internet.

e.   Actions reversal should be permitted.

f.    Memory term reduced.

Need to adopt changes in the environment of the workstation and change the concept of the look and feel used of multimedia, the latest modeling techniques:

Environment development always needs changes as time passes by. As we can change the techniques of hardware &software and make computers more reliable as they can be transferred in laptops, mini pads, wristwatches, and so many things, we should expand the memory of our equipment so we should not reach problems far away as it will save the time and space of the individual.

As we know multimedia is playing an important role in the industry of computers people use to talk with their loved ones through it, they use to play games n do many activities through it. It is also going in high demand. Most parents also give their children cell phones, computers, laptops, and iPads act to entertain them. Nowadays the youth also use to do their time pass through it.

Details and Drawbacks of Non-Standard Input/Output Devices:

As in the history of computers, there are a lot of input & output devices that came and go as it is going high and high so some of the nonstandard input/output devices are as under:

1.  JOYSTICK:

At an early age, these joysticks were used to play games. It is an input device that consists of a stick that moves here and there to control the thing you are using. It has one or more than one buttons to control underwater conveniences, trucks, tractors, and many more.

2.  VIDEO DIGITIZER:

ln early ages this device was used to convert analog images into digital format and further save a file on the computer and run in a video manner it was used to run movies, games, etc.

3.  CRT MONITOR :

CRT monitor stands for Cathode Ray Tube. It contains a lot of red, blue, and green dots which are stuck in it by an electron beam. This displays output results from the CPU or any device connected to the monitor.

4.   SPEAKER:

At early ages, speakers were attached externally to them and the speakers were very large .they were space gaining and they have a very huge voice. It creates a lot of heat and is also said that it’s become a cause of the fire. But if we look now so this all so changed just a small chip or card is attached to the computer which is known as a sound card/sound chip as it provides output to built-in speakers within the computer.

Benefits and Implications of Technology Development with Processing, Information Storage, and Hardware Devices:

There are many benefits and implications of technology development with processing, information storage, and hardware devices. As technology is reaching high day by day the working of people is also getting easy day by day as they manage everything from the office to home on their computers. They use to keep a person who looks after their computers in the office and a person known as an IT officer in the office.

Every single thing is been located by the computer even the camera in your house, office, restaurant, school, streets, etc. all are traced by the computer. The computer saves all the video a camera captured and it then worked for us in any difficulty even street crimes are also been seen by this technology of the computer. Technology is reaching its grade at a higher level and it helps people in many ways and is beneficial for all the people in the world.

Benefits of using Virtual Machine and its Personas:

A Virtual Machine (VM) is a computer system emulator. Physical computers and architecture computer functions are provided by Virtual Machines. Operating systems are provided by VIRTUAL MACHINES. Virtual machines are divided into two classes supported by their use and correspondence to the real machine: system virtual machines and method virtual machines. The first class provides an entire system platform that executes a complete OS, second can run one program. Frequently multiple virtual machines with their own OS’s are utilized in server consolidation, wherever completely different services are run in separate virtual environments, however on an equivalent physical machine. Server consolidation is the most compelling advantage of VMs. A typical non-virtualized application server could reach simply five-hitter to 100% utilization. However, a virtual server that hosts multiple VMs will simply reach five hundredths to eightieth utilization. Infobahn result’s that a lot of virtual machines are often hosted on fewer physical servers, translating into lower prices for hardware acquisition, maintenance, energy, and cooling system usage. Virtualization additionally facilitates VM creation and VM management. In contrast to standard servers that host a mix of AN OS, driver, and application files, a whole VM exists as one file, like a VMDK file. These golden pictures are often changed for every user or application.

Comparison and Evaluation of Recent Developments Done to Make Users Comfortable Use the Technology:

Early 1980’sRecent development
A.  In early times computers were very big they take a lot of space and was too hard for people to use HCI was not comfortableAnd if we look now they r really portable from a room computer r shifted in our palms and are really portable and easy to interact with.
B.  In the early days there was no such software people used to have just a single vesionofcomputerAs if we compare now we have a lot of high versions and many different for a different sources of work
C.  In the early days there were black and white monitors containing 0 pixels which takes a lot of space and electricity and did not look good. And if we compare it now we see that monitors are converted into LCD and LED and are really portable easy to keep anywhere n looks  good
D.  If we look at the early days people used to play games with a joystickPeople use to play games with key boars or a new version of the joystick is updated
E.   Years ago we used to have a keyboard and mouse with a wire attached to the central processing unitNowadays we use to have a wireless keyboard and mouse.
F.    In the early days we don’t have the option of USB installation in our central processing unitNow we have it in our laptops and computers which is very reliable
G.   In the early days there were big printers to take the print outWe do have reliable and easy-to-take-anywhere printers and a facility for color print

Implications of New Developments:

User Issues such as Categories of Users:

The greatest problem in history was the user issue. However, as time goes on, a lot more fields open up for the generation to join, and we can see a big difference in the generation as a result of the fact that so many people choose so many different careers. Computers also play a big role in this generation’s growth because, without them, nobody would be able to learn anything. HCI is crucial in this area because it pertains to a crucial aspect of our life that we should be aware of even if we don’t have to learn anything else: how to operate a computer. Yet, there are a lot of problems involving the users when we consider their problems. Everyone in this contemporary environment has a senior. And a lot of them were unaware of the fundamentals, rules, or, maybe more accurately, the ideal application of them. Because everyone utilizes things differently, it can be challenging for businesspeople to choose the right person for their profession. Also, they favor distinct groups for various fields.

 Impact on the Workplace:

Nowadays, there would be no workplace without HCI, and HCI is crucial to the workplace. There are no workplaces nowadays that do not use computers, and their positive effects on workplaces are well known given the prevalence of websites, emails, and other forms of online communication.

HCI’s Role in Health and Safety:

In human existence, safety and health are both paramount. Every system involves human contact, even equipment, and machinery used in hospitals that operate while interacting with patients. HCI concerns for medical issues have surfaced, urging the use of safer equipment while purposefully altering mindsets. In terms of sheer numbers, more people die as a result of computational errors and preventable errors in healthcare facilities than on the streets. According to estimates, related increased clinic stays, etc., will cost the NHS more than £600Mpa. Formal tests and lab work with doctors show that programming and HCI improvements can reliably lower error rates by a significant amount. Swansea’s research has a significant global impact on chiefs, doctors, manufacturers, and controllers. HCI has an impact on people’s health.

User characteristics such as Human Memory, Perceptions of humans, attention, reasoning, communication, and role of the users cognitive model:

a.       Human Memory:

An imperative part of the human-PC connection is discovering an approach to facilitate the heap on a client’s memory. With a specific end goal to comprehend this idea, it is important to comprehend the essential procedures of human memory. At first, the PC gives jolts that can comprise content, sound, and designs. Next, receptors situated in the eyes, ears, and hands pass the data into tactile capacity. If this data has any incentive to the client, it will be moved into here-and-now memory. Besides, this data can be passed into long-haul memory where it can be called upon at a later time. These ideas can be connected when outlining menus, bookmarks, searches, and different methods for getting to the content.

b.      Perceptions of Humans:

While for certain HCI tasks perceiving is compulsory, hearing with playing game, hearing with watching a movie, etc, memory is concerned with all things human is performing, Perceptions of human carries of hearing and what he is understanding HCI plays an important role in perceiving human activities such as they can hear and interact with a computer

c.       Attention:

Attention requires one to concentrate on anything while human-computer interaction required user attention to understand a task that he is doing, attention is required to understand interaction with the computer also requires attention, and every task while in HCI requires attention.

d.   Reasoning Communication:

The reason HCI for communication is any verbal test or calling someone or any other method of communication in which the user is communicating to someone through HCI.

Role of User Cognitive Model:

This model allows users to harness intuition and allows user to have problem-solving skills while interacting with the computer. They model the role of the users defined above as well:

1.   Understanding.

2.   Knowledge.

3.   Intentions.

4.   Processing.

5.   Common categorization.

6.   Competence vs. Performance.

7.   Computational flavor.

Legal Implications:

Legal implications square measure the results of being concerned with one thing, as determined by the law. The definition of legal is about, or in step with, law.  The implication is being concerned, entangled, or inexplicit. An example is the legal implications of the wedding, which may be a binding contract. The couple square measure guaranteed to one another underneath law. Their assets square measure thought-about to be joint assets or liabilities. This includes things like bank accounts, savings, property, debts, inheritances, and pension funds

Legal implications are often positive or negative. For instance, the potential legal implications of drunk driving square measure being inactive penalized, and prohibited. A positive example of legal implications is applying for employment and being discriminated against on grounds like sex, age, or race. This is often embezzled and you may enter into action against the leader.

Mapping of System Functionalities:

Mapping of any system describes the complete activity and functions in the system. Before start developing any system mapping is done firstly that what we have to develop and how the sequence of functions will be, without mapping there is no guidance for a developer that how should do and how it should be working, mapping is compulsory for any system or project to be done. Where mapping explains clearly which functions have to work first or lastly and it describes the data integration of the system, which data type is used, and for what purpose. Below figure attached is a mapping of my system. A mapping of my system explains that there are two users administrator and a customer. Where admin has rights to edit movies, view feedback, and review what customer is booking orders. Customers have the right to view movies and book, select seats, pay online or reserve, buy meals, and give feedback about the system.

HCI System:

Logical Sets Grouped Based on Tasks:

At this stage we have to satisfy the user, we will be creating a registration HCI with some text fields and labels, and buttons as per system requirements. The boxes describe that we have created text fields and labels in the form for a better HCI. This shows that we have added a button to accept and save user information into the database. The figures show that we have labeled the button with the name of the signup from which users can fill out the form and signup for booking their movies. This also depicts the final HCI design that we have added in which text fields, labels, buttons, and colored bar fields is showing users, whether the information typed is acceptable or not. This is a complete HCI design added to the system.

Usability Test:

This type of test is done by the real user of the system as this test was done by some users where they responded my system is well-defined because the HCI interface design was developed in point b and it is a user-friendly form for HCI to be filled by user and they can easily get registered to my system by this form and providing their information in the text field area and by clicking signup they will be a member of this web.

Analyze the Performance of the Task:

Examination of the task should be performed to know the feedback of users, and whether the task is done for what he proposed. Following is the analysis after performing this task input utilization of the machine which is keyboard and mouse. Other physical activities, like wrong entering of words, needing a backspace button on the keyboard, the need of lifting the mouse to revere, and head developments required when duplicate typing.

2.       Perceptual or cognitive activities, for example, realizing that the mouse pointer must be moved onto the proper title of the menu bar and clicked to see the substance of the menu navigation bar pull-down.

3.       Activities that are mentally included are likeliest of choice-making or memory reviews, for instance selecting the suitable symbol from the toolbar.

Rules and Principles for the Design of HCI:

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) needed to be seriously thought about for this system not only for reasons of accessibility but also to entertain users and allow them to access pages they want and allow accessing what they require to book movie tickets.

So for easy accessing for users this site will be simple and easy to access, no flash animation or complex design style will not be implemented on this website, so it is for users (human-computer interaction).

The website layout should not be changed between pages as it is defined as “User interfaces need to be consistent. It is difficult to emphasize this enough. The user should not be expected to remember a different sequence of events for similar actions.”

Online/Offline Help and Support Documentation:

For user comfort and help/support link on the main page is created, where the user can get a full document of the web, how to use and book from the web.

Support and maintenance of an interface/ Evaluation/ Configuration of a Live HCI Model:

While developing the system it was considered to create user-friendly software so humans can access our website easily without any thoughts or difficulties. As I was successful in this term the system is easy to access and for using one function for the user for reservation ticket booking is given extra for user comfortability to reserve tickets and can pay before 3 hours of movie, while creating any software or website human-computer interaction should be the priority to keep of thinking, as main thing of this system is HCI which is user-friendly and whole system HCI is through the keyboard to fill in information and moue to click buttons further on watching trailers and listening to the voice is also HCI as the system was created to provide satisfaction to the user while not having any problems in Human-Computer Interaction. The system which has been created regarding HCI with better interface points is as follows:

1.   1. Internet is required to access the web system

2.   2. Help/support hyperlink/link is created for the user to be guided by a system

3.   3. The interface is quite easy for any inexperienced user as well

4.   4. It is the best system for booking your movie and meals

5.   5. The interface is designed in a sequenced way for users to follow the method of booking step by step

6.   6. Text fields buttons and forms were created to register users and save their details in our system

According to me, it is important to know the easy answer for letting yourself and the regular users interact with and review the HCI model. As in the modern era, users are keen for the best responsive and interactive websites with which they interact daily. However, my experience was good enough in building up the user interface.

The requirements/specifications seem fit to any user and the reviews are impressive as the design was shown to different users who have experienced the User Interface and have not.

Effort Per Task:

As it is a rule no effort no success, a lot of effort done by for this HCI model/system, and I have learned every machine needs HCI to be in working, HCI plays a vital role in this generation, while the development of HCI system a lot of errors and debugs appeared but as I succeeded to create a user-friendly system, with all system requirement and HCI requirement, where user can use my system with a satisfaction.

Navigate the HCI:

Some systems or sites have a navigation panel that shows all the links available all the time our system home page has all links and hyperlinks we don’t have to navigate them for a user-friendly interface, and we haven’t used the navigation bar. Also, these sub-navigation frameworks are regularly coded so they must be gotten to using a mouse, for instance utilizing an onMouseOver (javascript) or onMouseEnter (language) occasion handler, in this way estranging console just users

User Satisfaction:

User satisfaction means when a user experienced a system it can be a website, application, excel, etc. either the system interface functions are reliable for users or the system is hard to use, each system get succeed if a user is satisfied with the interface and if your system function is user friendly, in my HCI model as I have mentioned before that all functions are on the home page in text fields with links no navigation is developed because of user-friendly interface and any user can access to our system if users are not satisfied with your system even though your system functions are fulfilling all requirements, you will be of lack of use by users only developer will use your system, customer/ user satisfaction is vital in any area of the field. My HCI web system is user satisfied because I have developed it to avoid all interfaces that distract users and all functions are easy to access.

Test and Review your HCI model concerning the guidelines of Fitt’s Law:

In 1954, psychologist Paul Fitts distributed a detailed article on his theory of human mechanics as it related to aimed development. It was Fitts’ perception that the activity of indicating or tapping an objective article could be measured and anticipated mathematically. After the theory proposal, it had no application for PCs yet; be that as it may, it shouldn’t take a present-day designer long to discover the effective importance this equation has in the context of user interfaces.
